Put It Down

I don't know about you but I love my phone. I love my phone a lot. I love twitter, instagram, snapchat and texting (this is a form of social media for the purpose of le post) incredibly too much. Maybe it's because two of my best friends live out of state and I love keeping in touch with them or if it's just the fact that all of those sources of communication make me feel connected and secure (weird right).

If it were not for social media and the internet world I would not have met my best friend and twin Rachael. I met Rachael through blogging and since she lives primarily in Ohio we are constantly texting, snapping, and tweeting. Our phones are our way to keep connected with each other.

However, there is something to be said about being on a phone too much, texting too much, and tweeting too much. So, now, let me explain myself because you are probably thinking that I am contradicting myself. Which I could totally see but wait for the punch line.

A couple weeks ago there was this youtube link going around about how our phones really do distract us from our daily life and our social time with friends. And while the video was harsh and a little dramatic; I found a lot of truth in the video.

And here's why.

I have been doing something recently where I don't bring my phone everywhere I go, I sometimes leave it at home and just go out to enjoy the company I have in front of me. I started putting down the phone and looking around to see how blessed I am. You see the phone will still be there when I get home and I can return all the texts, tweets, snapchats and instagrams. But what I can't get back are those little moments like when my parents and I go out to dinner and my dad does something incredibly silly, or those moments when your friends all come back into town and you all can sit and talk about what's going on in your lives with out the distraction of beeping phones and notifications.

When we are so obsorbed my our phones we forget to LOOK UP and see the beauty that the world has to offer and the blessings that life gives to you. I know, its hard and I know phones are great and social media is my passion.

But what I am starting to realize is that sometimes you can't get to know a new friend, if you are on your phone all the time when you're with them. Sometimes you have to put down the phone and disconnect to get to know someone.

I know that when I am spending quality time with Bear, or my friends I try to keep the phone out of my hands and keep my attention towards spending time with them. Social media is a blessing, I love it and I am so thankful to be so passionate about something. But I also know that there is a world past all of the notifications and alerts.

AND because it's Wednesday I am linking up with Kathy from Vodka and Soda because it's hump dayyyy.

  1. Turning off notifications does me a WORLD of good. I don't like to leave without my phone, because there's something to be said for always being able to reach your spouse (and things like a flat tire), but I like to turn my phone on silent, or leave it somewhere else in the house for a few hours.

  3. I try to be aware of my phone usage too. It is tough! I just leave it in my bag but then its there tempting me so maybe I'll start leaving it at home too.

  4. I didn't have a cell phone when I was stationed in GTMO and it was GLORIOUS! I went through withdraw at first, hearing phantom text messages and notifications, but when I got my cell phone back at my next duty station, I was kinda annoyed that I had to be reachable. Sometimes when I leave my phone at home by accident I get upset for the first few seconds and then I'm like, sorry not sorry and enjoy my day... until I need to look something up or ask someone a question. #firstworldproblems

  5. I love this!! We have discussed this a lot. Thank Goodenss for social media or we wouldn't be friends, though sometimes we really do need to look up.
